Whitley Awards 2025 for mid-career conservationists in the Global South (£40,000)
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024 .
Applications are now open for the 2025 Whitley Awards for mid-career conservationists . Whitley Awards fund grassroots conservation leaders in the Global South and put an international spotlight on winners’ work.
- Not High Income Economy countries – Wildlife conservation projects led by local leaders based in countries that are not defined as a High Income Economy by the World Bank . Exceptions to this criterion include Equatorial Guinea and certain island nations in the Caribbean. If you have any questions about eligible countries, please contact WFN.
- Nationals with local support – The Whitley Awards support nationals of the country in which they are working (i.e. you were born there or have lived there a long time and achieved national status.) If you are not a national but believe you have an exceptional case based on long term residency (15+ years) and a demonstrable commitment to that country/region, then please contact WFN.
- We seek grassroots conservationists who are embedded in and/or from the communities where they work. Applicants should work for or lead locally incorporated NGOs in the Global South. In-country staff employed by NGOs headquartered in the Global North are highly unlikely to be shortlisted for an award unless there are exceptional circumstances.
- Good communicators and passionate people – people who will inspire others and importantly, who will collaborate and share results. Please note applicants must be able to communicate in English.
- Leadership and teamwork – Whitley Awards are won by individuals backed by an appropriate team/organisation. Individuals working in isolation and team/joint entries are not eligible.
- Projects that are based on scientific evidence and understanding – this can be in the leader, expertise on the team, or via partners/collaboration.
- Work involving (and benefitting) the local community and stakeholders is essential.
- Ecosystem / landscape level projects are preferred. Genuine flagships are accepted, but not if results are purely species-specific.
- Projects must be able to demonstrate past success and an evidence-based approach . We do not fund pilot projects or work that is at the start-up stage.
- Grassroots, pragmatic work that is realistic, but ambitious too. We look for applicants on the cusp of ‘something big’ and work that is replicable or scalable .
- Actions that will have clear, measurable outcomes – we look for applications that have given careful thought to what indicators can be measured to evidence impact.
- Sustainable projects – we want the work to continue into the future, well past the Whitley Award. Successful proposals will demonstrate long-term planning.
- Projects that demonstrate value for money and ability to manage funding at the Whitley Award level (£40,000). Organisations with Audited Accounts are preferred.
- Projects for which an Award will make a big difference . Priority will be given to those that can demonstrate need.
- Work that needs publicity – ones that will do well if ‘doors can be opened’ via the media and enhanced recognition.
- Whitley Awards are worth £50,000 GBP in project funding over one year.
- Applications for the 2025 Whitley Awards are currently open and close at midnight GMT on 31 October 2024 .
- The Whitley Awards Ceremony will take place in Spring 2025, when winners are announced during a live event, which is also streamed online.

Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) in collaboration with Zoonotic Vector Borne Research and Training Center, Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), Shillong organized a 2-day workshop on advanced qualitative data analysis on July 24 th and July 25 th 2024 in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. The workshop included 30 participants from an interdisciplinary team of experts (medical doctors; master's and PhD scholars; government employees in the area of public health; faculty members from the region) from the northeast region of India. The idea for research workshops developed from conversations around the topic of enhancing research capacity towards localization efforts of USAID with Dr. Soma Chaudhuri (Co-Director of Global Research, GenCen), Dr. Sandra Albert (Director of IIPH Shillong) and Dr. Melari Nongrum (Dean, IIPH Shillong) during IIPH’s visit to Michigan State University in March of 2024. Red Sea Global’s fourth Annual Sustainability Report cements position as leader in regenerative tourism
The developer is well on track to deliver a net conservation benefit of 30% by 2040 .
Red Sea Global (RSG), the developer behind regenerative tourism destinations The Red Sea and AMAALA, has announced the release of its fourth Annual Sustainability Report, publicly disclosing RSG’s and its subsidiaries’ key commitments and progress toward ESG goals. The report demonstrates that RSG is firmly on track to meet its principal objective of delivering a net conservation benefit of 30% by 2040.
RSG’s 2023 Annual Sustainability Report, which discloses the organisation’s sustainability performance from January 1 – December 31, 2023, reflects the firm’s commitment to accountability and transparency, as it aims to establish new standards in global responsible development. The report details how the Group is monitoring and reporting against targets across environmental sustainability, social empowerment and governance, revealing strong progress across all categories.
“Our latest Annual Sustainability Report demonstrates that when we say we are committed to setting new standards in responsible development, we truly mean it. We are well on track to deliver a net conservation benefit of 30% by 2040 to the areas surrounding our destinations,” said John Pagano, Group CEO of Red Sea Global
“The work of our team across renewable energy, land and marine conservation and regeneration, social development and clean mobility is proof tourism development can be done another way. My hope is that the rest of the industry draws inspiration from our achievements and embeds regenerative principles into their own work.”
Some achievements highlighted within the report are:
- Installing a total of 760,000 photovoltaic solar panels to power the first phase of the Group’s flagship destination, The Red Sea, which opened in 2023
- Becoming the largest off-grid charging infrastructure operator in Saudi Arabia, with 150 electric vehicle charging stations and 82 electric vehicles
- Intervening to protect and enhance environments and species, such as nurturing more than five million plants at the Red Sea Landscape Nursery since it was established
- Preventing 46,350 tons of CO 2 emissions through carbon reduction initiatives ● Pledging a ‘Coral Commitment’, to protect and regenerate corals in the Red Sea and beyond, and pioneering work in coral cultivation led by marine life scientists ● Transplanting 600,000 mangrove seedlings to four different sites in a dedicated Mangrove Nursery
- Launching the Jewar app, a two-way communication channel for RSG to share news and opportunities with the local community, and for them to participate and share their views
- Rolling out a volunteering program to encourage mangrove planting and beach clean-ups, with more than 200 participants
- More than 3300 new employees, 50+ Elite Graduates and nearly 74,000 training hours delivered
- Setting a new environmental benchmark with the highest-ever score for Platinum LEED for Cities and Communities certification for The Red Sea Master Plan Phase 1
Last year, The Red Sea welcomed its first guests, with three of its hotels now open. Red Sea International Airport has been receiving a regular schedule of domestic flights since September 2023 and international flights began in April 2024, with a twice-weekly route between The Red Sea and Dubai International.
A second destination, Thuwal Private Retreat, located further south will open in the coming weeks. AMAALA remains on track to welcome first guests in 2025, when the first eight resorts complete as part of Triple Bay phase one, along with Corallium and the iconic Yacht Club.
RSG’s Annual Sustainability Report 2023 has been developed in accordance with GRI Standards. It is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to increase tourism’s share of GDP to 10% and create 1.6 million jobs. The full report can be read in full at this link.

World Nomads wins Best Responsible Tourism Campaign Global Youth Travel Award
Feb 16, 2022
Winner of the Global Youth Travel Award for Best Responsible Tourism Campaign Innovation: Travel Better Guest: Jon Whitby, GM Marketing and Brands, World Nomads
The Travel Better campaign was designed to inspire people to travel responsibly at a time when acting responsibly was crucial. World Nomads’ goals were to raise brand awareness, educate and inspire their audience about responsible travel, grow and engage a community of like-minded travellers, and strengthen relationships with travel organisations and non-profits that share their brand values.
Why such a campaign? Since World Nomads’ inception, responsible travel has been one of our brand pillars. We’ve always aimed to support sustainability and leave a positive footprint on the places we visit. The pandemic took that to another level. As travel was put on pause, we took the time to reflect. As the world started to re-open, we wanted our nomads to re-imagine travel as a force for good and empower them with the tools to make responsible choices. That’s how Travel Better was born.
How did the Travel Better campaign evolve? Led by our marketing team, with the help of the design, web and partnerships teams, the Travel Better campaign featured an enter-and-win storytelling contest to amplify our message and encourage travellers to participate in the conversation around responsible travel. We also created an engaging landing page, which featured our Responsible Travel Manifesto and responsible travel articles aimed at educating our audience.
Throughout the campaign, we tested our messaging and creatives – including subject lines and imagery—and measured success through open rates for our emails and click-through-rates for web pages to see what would resonate with our audiences. We made adjustments to optimise our channels, focusing the campaign on the top relevant messages.
During the month-long campaign, we achieved 5 million campaign impressions through multi-channel sources; 55,000 sessions on the Travel Better campaign landing page; 10,000 campaign entries from travellers in 100 countries; 25,000 sessions on responsible travel articles and established partnerships with responsible brands, such as OneSeed Expeditions, Hostelworld, Light My Fire, and Tomorrow’s Air.
What are some of the unique challenges for the Travel Better campaign? Timing for the campaign was a challenge; this was the first global campaign since the pandemic started. While travel sentiments had improved at that time, most of the world was still trying to handle high COVID-19 case counts, low vaccination rates and travel or border restrictions. While the campaign’s intent was to inspire travellers to start thinking about travel mindfulness, the idea of travel still seemed far away for some travellers.
How do you see responsible tourism campaigns changing in the future? What needs to change on the business and consumer sides to make a significant shift towards sustainable tourism? As the COVID-19 pandemic created a global pause in travel, we have all seen the benefits this pause has brought to the world in terms of environmental impact, reduction in pollution, and more. It seems inevitable that as travel returns, travellers will be looking to encourage those improvements and seek experiences that continue in this direction. Travel campaigns will focus on sustainability, responsibility and respect for people and the planet.
Tourism businesses need to recognise there is an appetite for small tour group numbers, cities offering green credentials and improvements, sustainable accommodation and transport options and to encourage their growth. Consumers need to insist on those choices being available and to choose them over more traditional forms of travel that only benefit the traveller not and the places and people they visited.
How has World Nomads benefited from WYSE Travel Confederation and its community? WYSE Travel Confederation has been a constant source of insight, when international travel has been so difficult, the sharing of experiences and commentary from our peers in other countries has been invaluable. It goes without saying, we have never once come away from an event empty handed when it comes to leads and opportunities to follow up.
The Global Youth Travel Awards recognise the tremendous achievements our peers in the travel sector have made, particularly during such a challenging period. So, to us, these awards represent an opportunity to celebrate the resiliency and fortitude of the youth travel sector and also to showcase some projects we completed that we are particularly proud of.

WYSE Travel Confederation launches 2023 Global Youth Travel Awards
The four consumer-voted awards (Best Hostel, Best LGBTQ+ Travel Experience, Best Travel App, Best Youth Tour Operator) offer travel businesses the opportunity to promote themselves, and at the same time, young travellers to voice their opinions on the best of youth travel.
The Global Youth Travel Awards (GYTAs), held annually by WYSE Travel Confederation , formally recognise outstanding performers across several fields of international youth travel and reward stakeholders in the youth, student and educational travel industry that make a noteworthy contribution to the industry.
Now in their thirteenth year, the Global Youth Travel Awards are open to all organisations that work with youth travellers, regardless of their size or location.
The nominated awards (Best Responsible Tourism Initiative, Outstanding Contribution to the SDGs, Best DEI Initiative, Best Marketing Campaign, Best Travel Tech Provider, Best Work Experience Provider, Best Education Abroad Provider, Extraordinary Experience, WYSTC Partnership Award) allow organisations to put forward a project, programme, product/service, campaign or collaboration that has had measurable impact on the industry over the last year.
“We are delighted to expand the awards categories once again this year,” said David Chapman , Director General at WYSE Travel Confederation. “The reintroduction of the popular consumer-voted awards allow customers to have their say and travel organisations to be recognised for their dedication to making youth travel a safer, smoother and more expansive experience.”
Applications for the nominated awards and voting for the consumer-voted awards close on Friday, 18 August, 23:59 CEST. Winners will be announced on the final evening of the World Youth and Student Travel Conference (WYSTC) in Lisbon on 15 September 2023.

Global Youth Travel Awards 2017
On Thursday evening of the 2017 World Youth and Student Travel Conference delegates donned their evening attire – gala dresses, suits and ties, and, yes, even one kilt.
After the initial shock wore off, emcee Nick Pound of World Nomads loosened up the Global Youth Travel Awards (GYTAs) crowd with questionable humour and a riveting game of heads and tails. But, of course, the night really belonged to the who’s who in youth and student travel. WYSE Travel Confederation awarded fourteen winners who’ve shown outstanding performance in the youth travel industry.
This year, GYTA judges sifted through a record number of entries, with particularly strong candidates in the categories related to sustainability efforts. YHA Australia took home the Best Green Accommodation Initiative. In 2017, YHA adopted a new Sustainability Action Plan, which encompasses all layers of the organisation – from the Directors setting strategy, down to the chickens laying fresh eggs for their guests at Port Stephens YHA. In 2016, this category went to YHA New Zealand.
“It’s awesome for YHA Australia to receive this award, especially when sustainability and the environment is so important and our efforts are being recognised,” said a YHA Australia representative.
World Nomads claimed the award for Best Social Responsibility Initiative. World Nomads founded The Footprints Network , which connects travelers to projects run by established charities so that they can help fund projects in destinations that they care about. To date 1,049,771 travelers have donated raising $2,761,185 to change lives by funding 174 community development projects worldwide.

Best Education Abroad Provider
The green program.
The GREEN Program was founded in 2009 by ambitious, knowledge-hungry undergraduate students who were dissatisfied with the lack of opportunities for the students seeking unique educational paths. At the age of 19, Melissa Lee, CoFounder and CEO, was feeling complacent with educational opportunities available at her home institution. Passionate about hands-on education and global experiences, Lee and her team quickly came to realize that this feeling of stagnation stemmed from the monotony of in-classroom education and traditional textbook learning.
Created for students, by students, The GREEN Program has introduced a new model for education abroad. Their accredited, short-term model focuses on bringing transformative experiences to students around the world and unlocking doors to governmental, public, and private facility access, exclusive tours, and unique bucket-list experiences. They work with universities around the world to redefine what a classroom should mean – from lecture halls to studying the effects of climate change on the top of our world’s glaciers.
As commitment partners to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, The GREEN Program exposes students to the heart and guts of these sustainability challenges and initiatives around the world. They help students maximize their winter, spring, and summer breaks in order to allow them to get in a fulfilling educational abroad experience within just 8-10 days. All the while, students are able to land that awesome internship they’ve had their eye on, complete summer classes needed to graduate on time, or challenge their idea towards global citizenship.
Currently in their 7th year, the GREEN Program operates over the spread of three continents, immersing students in innovative travel experiences in unique locations around the globe, from Iceland to Japan, from Thailand to Peru.

Best Green Accommodation Initiative
Yha australia.
As part of the world’s largest budget accommodation network, Hostelling International, YHA Australia has fully embraced 2017 as the UNWTO’s International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, implementing initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of their eighty-five hostels around Australia.
In 2017, YHA adopted a new Sustainability Action Plan, which encompasses all layers of the organisation – from the Directors setting strategy, down to the chickens laying fresh eggs for their guests at Port Stephens YHA. They also bring their guests along on the green journey, with initiatives such as ceasing the sale of bottled water from vending machines at key hostels and installing drinkable water fountains instead.
As well as incorporating environmental initiatives into their everyday operations at YHA, they also operate a crowd-funded Sustainable Hostels Fund, to which guests can voluntarily contribute $1 per booking. YHA then matches these contributions dollar-for-dollar and uses this money for green projects at hostels around Australia, with the objectives of reducing energy and water consumption, carbon emissions and waste generation.
Since the scheme began in 2010, YHA’s guests have raised over a quarter of a million dollars. The Fund bankrolls one major project each year, meaning seven projects have been completed to date as follows: Adelaide Central YHA (solar hot water), Alice Springs YHA (solar power, feeding to the grid), Byron Bay YHA (solar hot water), Perth City YHA (solar power), Pittwater YHA in Sydney (solar hot water), Railway Square YHA (solar hot water), and Sydney Harbour YHA (solar power installed in 2017).

STA identified the Philippines as a trending travel destination for the youth market and recognised that the this audience was looking for unique inspiration and real experiences in this destination.
The Philippines Unplugged concept answered combined the idea of acoustic, unplugged music with the feeling of travel freedom, being wild and “unplugged” from a digital device and the world of communication. The campaign’s objectives were to educate and inspire people to travel to the Philippines, using rich music and destination focused content, and the story of Skinny Living’s adventure and creative music process.
As Skinny Living journeyed around the Philippines, they experienced beaches, jungles, underground caves, food and life with locals, they also created and produced an exclusive new track, which they then performed at a live gig in Palawan at the end of the trip.
The Philippines Unplugged campaign offered a fresh and original perspective of the Philippines, presenting music, travel and cultural discovery in an accessible and authentic way for Millennials and Gen Z. The campaign was successful in educating, inspiring, and opening people’s eyes to the Philippines as a destination and resulted in increased web traffic and sales.
Best Social Responsibility Initiative
World nomads.
With two billion of the world’s population living on less than $2 a day, alleviating crushing poverty and the health, social and environmental ills that accompany it, is everyone’s moral responsibility. Yet the extent of world poverty can seem so overwhelming that many of us are left feeling helpless. A commitment to overcome this feeling of powerlessness is exactly what motivated the team at World Nomads to found The Footprints Network, which connects travelers to projects run by established charities so that they can help fund projects in destinations that they care about. The funds for these community-based projects are raised through micro-donations at the point of sale. All administration and technology costs are paid by World Nomads to ensure that 100% of donations go directly to the projects. To date 1,049,771 travelers have donated raising $2,761,185 to change lives by funding 174 community development projects worldwide.
Some examples:
- The Youth Vocational Training Project in Cambodia which supported 252 disadvantaged young people (159 young women and 67 young men) to complete vocational skills training linked to employment and self-employment opportunities.
- A Women’s Financial Literacy project in Malawi that allowed 79 Village Saving Loans groups to open bank accounts, depositing US$15,597 and 1,185 Village Saving Loan members to open individual accounts, depositing US$10,934.
- Women’s Small Business Enterprise project in Vietnam resulted in 1125 women establish agriculture businesses.
Footprints empowers travellers enabling them to make a significant difference, being able to choose which individual project to fund and to constantly monitor the progress of the project.

Best Travel Safety Initiative
Put simply, Vagaband is a safety wristband. A nearly indestructible, wearable medical ID bracelet, Vagaband offers young travellers a tech-free way to keep life-saving information accessible at all times. It is made from a piece of Polysubstrate which folds in on itself, forming a flat wristband. The Vagaband wearer records any information (medical or personal) that might be relevant in an emergency.
Vagaband was launched with a successful kick starter campaign in late 2015. It is a unique product that has been painstakingly crafted to make sure that it is simple to use, stylish enough to wear, and secure enough to always have your back. It has been created by young travellers for young travellers to fill a big gap in the travel safety market.
Best Travel Technology Product
Travel navigator by ingle international.
Travel Navigator is a web and mobile application that provides a one-stop spot for medical, security, and travel information before, during, and after a trip. It is a robust duty of care solution for travelling chaperones and students all over the world with one goal: to keep its traveller’s safe and informed.
Ingle International identified a gap in the market for a travel risk management technology platform. The student market was a clear fit for Travel Navigator as teachers and students continue to travel extensively for class trips. Education programmess require a duty of care solution to ensure student safety. Trying to locate chaperones and students all over the world was difficult to do in a timely manner, especially during an emergency. Travel Navigator fills this gap by providing real-time alerts, seamless communication features, and live traveller tracking.
The vision is to keep as many youth travellers safe and informed with all the information they need to feel secure and confident in their travels knowing help is only a click away. As the world continues to experience tragic events, Travel Navigator’s goal is to not instill fear into travellers but provide them with tools to feel empowered.
Best Work Experience Provider
Alliance abroad group.
WYSTC 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa, was a game changer for Alliance Abroad Group: it was when they first had the idea to offer a fully-paid internship to a deserving WYSTC volunteer. The idea further flourished after forming a relationship with the first recipient, Thato Khasuli . Understanding more about this young man and his circumstances as an underprivileged African youth and the perspective he provided, encouraged Alliance Abroad Group to expand their reach so that, rather than assisting a single needy youth, they could find a way to help many more.
This is how Alliance Abroad discovered the Ubuntu Institute, an African organization with a tremendous reputation for improving the lives of South Africans facing economic, social and physical hardships, dedicated to “ driving social change through a values-based leadership approach ”. They have now entered into an exclusive arrangement to support their education and skills training programmes, working together towards the Institute’s mission to obliterate poverty and erase ignorance through skills training and education.
The Ubuntu Institute Education programme is focused on skills development, training, providing employment and scholarships for disadvantaged youths and adults. The programme focuses on the international community, particularly the USA, where youths are sent for training and internship opportunities. Alliance Abroad is their exclusive partner, chartered with identifying employment opportunities in Austin, Texas and elsewhere that will provide critical skills training and work experience.
The training these youths receive will increase their chances of gainful employment when they return to Africa. Eradicating poverty by equipping young people with the skills and training to make a living is a shared goal of their organizations.
Since the programme’s inception less than one year ago, 150 African youths are currently in the USA, gainfully employed and learning life-changing job skills. By the end of the year, Alliance Abroad and the Ubuntu Institute are on track to place 430 students in internships.

Best Youth Travel Blogger
Polkadot passport.
Nowadays we hear many stories of people in their late twenties who quit their corporate jobs to travel the world. Nicola’s story, however, is a little different. At the age of 19, she decided not to take the conventional path of going to university and getting a full-time job, and instead saved up to go on her first solo trip overseas. Four years of travel later, and at the age of 23 she is making a living from travelling the world full-time.
In starting Polkadot Passport, Nicola’s main objective was to inspire young people to go out and explore the world. From the beginning, Nicola created the blog to be relatable to her audience, which she does through sharing her personal travelling journey and honest travel advice. The blog is also intended as a source of travel inspiration, including bucket-list worthy destinations, experiences and accommodation, as well as travel and photography tips and tricks.
Polkadot Passport has gained a lot of success in the past 3 years, with over 260,000 engaged followers on social media and over 70,000 monthly readers, with 75% of the audience between the ages of 18-35 years old.
Whilst many influencers these days show only the inspirational, glamorous side of travel, she has always tried her best to be real with her audience by talking about the ups and downs of travelling full-time. She also aims to highlight the importance of meaningful travel, sharing her volunteering experiences and ways how she tries to travel in a sustainable way.

Extraordinary Experience
Ariana sánchez barrios – council on international educational exchange (ciee).
The CIEE Civic Leadership Summit brings a select cohort of Summer Work Travel students together for an all-expenses-paid, 3-day symposium in Washington, D.C., in August, focussing on teaching motivated young leaders from around the world about the power of diplomacy and how to become change-makers. The summit is, at its core, an opportunity: to learn, to network, to grow, and to get started.
Ariana Sánchez Barrios is the sort of person who turns every opportunity into a result, which is exactly why CIEE chose her as a Civic Leadership Summit fellow. She was so inspired by her time in D.C. – who she met, what she learned in our workshops – that she created her own summit for professional development in her home country of Venezuela. The CEVAZ Leadership Seminar was designed from the ground up with young Venezuelans in mind, and will cover topics like digital marketing, social networks, public speaking, personal branding, storytelling, and other essential elements of virtual business and enterprising. Presenters include journalists, university professors, brand managers, TV and radio hosts, life coaches, motivational speakers, and more.
The looming crisis in Venezuela leaves her country at a crossroad: in one direction we see a stable democracy, while in the other we see an autocracy that can’t provide for its own people. Ariana is fighting back with entrepreneurship. By helping other young people like her build the businesses, the ventures, and the NGOs that Venezuela so desperately needs, she is working toward a future of hope.
She is on a mission to create positive change in her home country using her leadership and exchange experiences as tools to help her achieve her goals. She is wise beyond her years and committed to her work that it’s hard to imagine anything stopping her. In her own words, “I believe we are all an important and useful tool for society.”

Outstanding Volunteer Project
African impact.
African Impact’s Build-It volunteer program is based in the town of Livingstone, Zambia, and was launched in March 2016, addressing the extreme levels of poverty within the local communities. The programme provides safe structures built with ecological, affordable and self-sustaining materials and aims to educate communities in waste management and help to reduce waste and litter in an environmentally-friendly way. This is achieved through the use of eco-bricks; PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles filled with soft plastics, which can include cellophane, chip packets, sweet wrappers, plastic bags and anything else that can’t easily be recycled. Once all the soft plastic is stuffed and packed into the bottle, the bottle is screwed closed and then used as a building brick.
Volunteers on this program work closely with two local communities: Linda Farm, a community set up to empower and rehabilitate those living with disabilities, and the Dambwa community, each of whom are in desperate need of affordable, sustainable infrastructure. Achievements in the first community include the building a compost bin, chicken coop and piggery and an ablution block for the disabled community, giving them a more hygienic and private place to go to the bathroom, while a kitchen bench and seats for pupils to sit are amongst the achievements at the Dambwa Trust School.
Through this program, the students exchange the bricks which they have made out of litter, for prizes ranging from pencils (1 Brick) to items of clothing (50 Bricks)! It has seen us receive over 3000 eco-bricks!
Build-It ensures that volunteers work alongside local people each and every single day, including community liaisons as well as local tradespeople. Build-It also has another unique offering, in that our volunteers are often involved in the planning process of a build, as well as assisting with purchases of materials and discussions with community members. They are able to gain skills for project management, as well as construction. Further to that, they also gain a lot of experience in farming and harvesting crops, as they work closely with the local community to find solutions for income generation.

Alliance Abroad Honored at the 2023 Global Youth Travel Awards
- September 20, 2023
- News , Spotlight
Alliance Abroad has clinched the coveted ‘Best Work Experience Provider’ Award at this year’s Global Youth Travel Awards. The recognition came during the WYSTC conference in Lisbon on September 15th, and it’s safe to say we’re more than a little thrilled.
This honor is a testament to the success of our “Rising Starrs” scholarship initiative in collaboration with the Starr Restaurant Group. The brainchild of Alliance Abroad’s VP of Host Employer Relations Zhanna Saparova, the initiative uplifts and empowers budding female culinary talents from developing nations grappling with gender imbalances. It’s one of our flagship programs to offer life-changing cultural exchange and work experiences to those who most deserve it, and we’re ecstatic that it has been recognized in this way.
Speaking about this innovative project, Saparova says “In the culinary world, women face unique challenges that often go unnoticed. With the Rising Starrs Scholarship, in partnership with the stellar women leaders at the Starr Restaurant Group, we aim to change that narrative, offering a platform where women elevate women to culinary greatness”.
The initiative is further enhanced by the professional training and mentorship being delivered to the participants by senior female members of the Starr Restaurants Group and Business mentors from the Exceptional Women’s Alliance. To equip these aspiring chefs with the tools to flourish as future entrepreneurs and instigate lasting positive impacts in their communities, we’re offering workshops on everything from Business Planning and Project Management to Fundraising and Team Leadership.
The “Rising Starrs” initiative is but a chapter in our overall story. It exemplifies our dedication to providing cultural exchange and work experience while simultaneously enacting positive societal change. By focusing on empowering female culinary talents from developing nations, we’re sending out a clarion call about the importance of gender equity and opportunity. Alliance Abroad’s commitment extends beyond singular projects. Our holistic approach to global cultural exchange and work experiences has transformed lives, built bridges between cultures, and nurtured future leaders across sectors and geographies. From Summer Work and travel placements in Galveston, Texas, to culinary internships in Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain, we’ve always been about creating diverse, inclusive, and innovative opportunities worldwide.
As we appreciate the distinction this award brings, our resolve only strengthens. We’ll continue to innovate, inspire, and, most importantly, invest in the future. As James Bell, CEO of Alliance Strategies, Alliance Abroad’s parent company, says, “At Alliance Abroad, we don’t just curate experiences, we craft futures. This award isn’t just an acknowledgment of our efforts but a testament to the power of collaboration, passion, and vision. We’ve always believed in breaking boundaries and forging global pathways that empower, educate, and elevate. To have our Rising Starrs Scholarship Initiative recognized by the Global Youth and Travel Awards is heartening. However, our journey doesn’t stop here. We remain committed, now more than ever, to shaping experiences that resonate, transform, and most importantly, make a tangible difference in our interconnected world.”

History of Yekaterinburg
Foundation of yekaterinburg.
The territory along the Iset River, which served as a convenient transport route from the Ural Mountains deep into Siberia, has long attracted settlers. The oldest of the currently discovered settlements on the territory of present Yekaterinburg was located next to the Palkinsky Stone Tents rock massif and dates back to the 6th millennium BC.
From the 7th-3rd centuries BC, ancient metallurgists who mastered the smelting of copper lived in this settlement. Copper figures of birds, animals, people, arrowheads, various household items were found here. Later they learned how to make iron products. All discovered settlements were destroyed as a result of fires, possibly during raids of the conquerors.
The territory occupied by present Yekaterinburg became part of Russia in the middle of the 17th century. At that time, it had practically no permanent population. The first Russian settlements were founded in the second half of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, the first ironworks were built here.
In the spring of 1723, by decree of Emperor Peter I, the construction of the largest iron-making plant in Russia began on the banks of the Iset River. Construction began on the initiative of Vasily Tatishchev (a prominent Russian statesman). He was supported by Georg Wilhelm de Gennin (a German-born Russian military officer and engineer), on the initiative of which the fortress plant was named Yekaterinburg in honor of Empress Catherine I (Yekaterina in Russian), the wife of Peter I.
More Historical Facts…
The historic birthday of Yekaterinburg is November 18, 1723. On this day, a test run of the plant equipment was carried out. Its main products included iron, cast iron, and copper. In 1725, the Yekaterinburg Mint began production on the territory of the fortress and became the main producer of copper coins in the Russian Empire. Until 1876, it produced about 80% of the country’s copper coins. In the 1720s, the population of Yekaterinburg was about 4,000 people.
Yekaterinburg - one of the economic centers of the Russian Empire
In the middle of the 18th century, the first ore gold in Russia was discovered in this region, which was the beginning of the gold industry in the country. As a result, Yekaterinburg became the center of a whole system of densely located plants and began to develop as the capital of the mining region, which spread on both sides of the Ural Range.
In 1781, Catherine II granted Yekaterinburg the status of a county town in the Perm Governorate. The population of the town was about 8,000 people. In 1783, the town received a coat of arms depicting an ore mine and a melting furnace, which symbolized its mining and metallurgical industries (similar images are depicted on the current coat of arms and flag of Yekaterinburg).
In 1783, the Great Siberian Road was opened - the main road of the Russian Empire that passed through Yekaterinburg. It served as an impetus for the transformation of Yekaterinburg into a transport hub and a center of trade. Thus, Yekaterinburg, among other towns of the Perm Governorate, became the key town for the development of the boundless and rich Siberia, the “window to Asia”, just as St. Petersburg was the Russian “window to Europe.”
In 1808, the Yekaterinburg plant was closed, and the history of the town entered a new stage related to the development of a large regional center with a diversified economy. At the beginning of the 19th century, the gold mining industry flourished. At the same time, deposits of emeralds, sapphires, aquamarines, diamonds, and other precious, semiprecious, and ornamental stones were discovered in the Urals. Yekaterinburg became one of the world centers for their artistic processing.
After the abolition of serfdom in 1861, the mining industry of the Urals experienced a severe crisis, a number of plants were closed. In 1878, the first railway was constructed across the Urals and connected Yekaterinburg with Perm. In 1888, the Yekaterinburg-Tyumen railway was built, and in 1897 - the railway to Chelyabinsk, which provided access to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Yekaterinburg became a major railway junction, which contributed to the development of the local food industry, especially flour milling. In 1913, the population of Yekaterinburg was about 69,000 people.
Yekaterinburg in the first years of Soviet power
On November 8, 1917, Soviet power was established in Yekaterinburg. On April 30, 1918, the last Russian emperor Nicholas II and his family members with a few servants were transported from Tobolsk to Yekaterinburg. They were placed in the “House of Special Purpose”, the mansion of engineer Nikolai Ipatiev requisitioned for this purpose, and transferred under the supervision and responsibility of the Ural Regional Soviet.
In July 1918, units of the White Siberian army approached Yekaterinburg, under this pretext the leadership of the Ural Regional Soviet decided to shoot the imperial family. On the night of July 16-17, 1918, it was done in the basement of the Ipatiev House.
10 days later, units of the Czechoslovak Legion entered Yekaterinburg. Over the next 12 months, it was under the control of anti-Bolshevik forces. On July 14, 1919, the Red Army reoccupied the city. Soviet authorities and the Yekaterinburg Province with a center in Yekaterinburg were restored. In 1920, the population of the city was about 94,400 people.
The political center of the Urals moved from Perm to Yekaterinburg. In 1923, Yekaterinburg became the administrative center of the vast Ural Oblast, which in size exceeded the territory of the present Ural Federal District of Russia. In 1924, the city council decided to rename the capital of the new region to Sverdlovsk - in honor of Yakov Sverdlov, a Bolshevik party administrator and chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee.
Sverdlovsk - a Soviet industrial giant
During the years of Stalin’s industrialization, Sverdlovsk was turned into a powerful industrial center. The old factories were reconstructed and new large factories were built, including giant machine-building and metal processing plants. In 1933, the construction of the future flagship of Soviet engineering (Uralmash) was completed. The population of Sverdlovsk grew by more than 3 times, and it became one of the fastest growing cities in the USSR.
January 17, 1934, Ural Oblast was divided into three regions - Sverdlovsk Oblast with a center in Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast with a center in Chelyabinsk, and Ob-Irtysh Oblast with a center in Tyumen. By the end of the 1930s, there were 140 industrial enterprises, 25 research institutes, 12 higher educational institutions in Sverdlovsk. In 1939, the population of the city was about 425,500 people.
Along with other Ural cities, Sverdlovsk made a significant contribution to the victory of the USSR in the Second World War. In total, more than 100,000 residents of the city joined the Red Army. 41,772 people didn’t return from the war: 21,397 - killed in battles, 4,778 - died from wounds in hospitals, 15,491 - went missing, 106 - died in prisoner of war camps.
Sverdlovsk became the largest evacuation point, more than 50 large and medium enterprises from the western regions of Russia and Ukraine were evacuated here. During the war years, industrial production in Sverdlovsk grew 7 times.
After the war, this city became the largest center for engineering and metalworking in Russia. During the Cold War, Sverdlovsk, as a key center of the defense industry, was practically closed to foreigners. In 1960, in the sky above the city, Soviet air defense shot down the U-2 spy plane of the US manned by Francis Gary Powers.
On January 23, 1967, a millionth resident was born in the city and Sverdlovsk became one of the first Russian cities with a population of more than 1 million people. In 1979, Sverdlovsk was included in the list of historical cities of Russia.
On October 4, 1988, a serious accident occurred at the Sverdlovsk railway station. The train carrying almost 100 tons of explosives rolled downhill and crashed into a coal freight train. An explosion occurred, aggravated by the proximity of a large warehouse of fuels and lubricants. The funnel at the site of the explosion had a diameter of 40-60 meters and a depth of 8 meters, the shock wave spread 10-15 kilometers. The explosion killed 4 people at the station and injured more than 500 people. About 600 houses were severely damaged.
Yekaterinburg - one of the largest cities of the Russian Federation
On September 4, 1991, the Sverdlovsk City Council of People’s Deputies decided to return the city its original name - Yekaterinburg. The population of the city was about 1,375,000 people. The restrictions on foreign visitors to the city were also lifted, and soon the first consulate general was opened here - the United States of America (in 1994).
The transition to a market economy led to a reduction in production at industrial enterprises, inert giant plant found themselves in a particularly difficult situation. In 1991, the construction of the television tower was stopped. The city was flooded with chaotic small retail trade in temporary pavilions and markets. These years were the heyday of organized crime, Yekaterinburg became one of the “criminal capitals” of Russia. The economic situation began to improve by the end of the 1990s.
In 2000-2003, the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land was built on the site of the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. In 2008-2009, the Koltsovo Airport was reconstructed. In June 15-17, 2009, SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) and BRIC (Brasilia, Russia, India, China) summits were held in Yekaterinburg.
In 2015, the Presidential Center of Boris Yeltsin, the first president of Russia, was opened in Yekaterinburg. On March 24, 2018, the abandoned unfinished television tower was dismantled. It was the tallest building in the city (almost 240 meters) and became one of the symbols of Yekaterinburg. 4 matches of FIFA World Cup 2018 were played in Yekaterinburg.
Today, Yekaterinburg is the largest center of attraction not only of Sverdlovsk Oblast, but also of the surrounding regions. By some socio-economic indicators, this city ranks third in Russia, after Moscow and St. Petersburg. Along with the development of trade and business, the city lost the status of the country’s largest industrial center.

Yekaterinburg - Features
Yekaterinburg is located in the floodplain of the Iset River on the eastern slope of the Middle Urals in Asia, near its border with Europe, about 1,800 km east of Moscow. Since the Ural Mountains are very old, there are no significant hills in the city.
This relief was a favorable condition for the construction of the main transport routes from Central Russia to Siberia (the Siberian Route and the Trans-Siberian Railway) through Yekaterinburg. As a result, it has become one of the most strategically important centers of Russia, which still provides a link between the European and Asian parts of the country.
Yekaterinburg is located in the border zone of temperate continental and continental climates. It is characterized by a sharp variability in weather conditions with well-defined seasons. The Ural Mountains, despite their low height, block the way to the masses of air coming from the west from the European part of Russia.
As a result, the Middle Urals is open to the invasion of cold Arctic air and continental air of the West Siberian Plain. At the same time, warm air masses of the Caspian Sea and the deserts of Central Asia can freely enter this territory from the south.
That is why the city is characterized by sharp temperature fluctuations and the formation of weather anomalies: in winter from severe frosts to thaws and rains, in summer from heat above plus 35 degrees Celsius to frosts. The average temperature in January is minus 12.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.
The city has a rather unfavorable environmental situation due to air pollution. In 2016, Yekaterinburg was included in the list of Russian cities with the worst environmental situation by this indicator. Car emissions account for more than 90% of all pollution.
Yekaterinburg ranks third in Russia (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) in the number of diplomatic missions, while their consular districts extend far beyond Sverdlovsk Oblast, and serve other regions of the Urals, Siberia, and the Volga region.
In terms of economy, Yekaterinburg also ranks third in the country. It is one of the largest financial and business centers of Russia. The main branches of production: metallurgical production and metalworking, food production, production of electrical equipment, electronic and optical equipment, production of vehicles, production of machinery and equipment, chemical production.
Almost all types of urban public transport are presented in Yekaterinburg: buses, trolleybuses, trams, subways, taxis. Yekaterinburg is the third largest transportation hub in Russia: 6 federal highways, 7 main railway lines, as well as Koltsovo International Airport, one of the country’s largest airports. The location of Yekaterinburg in the central part of the region allows you to get from it to any major city of the Urals in 7-10 hours.
Yekaterinburg has an extensive scientific and technical potential, it is one of the largest scientific centers in Russia. The Presidium and about 20 institutes of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 66 research institutes, and about 30 universities are located here.
This city is a relatively large tourist center. A significant part of tourists visit it to honor the memory of the last Russian emperor and his family killed by the Bolsheviks in the basement of the Ipatiev House in 1918.
There are about 50 different museums in Yekaterinburg. One of the world’s largest collections of constructivist architectural monuments has been preserved here. In total, there are over 600 historical and cultural monuments in the city, of which 43 are objects of federal significance. The City Day of Yekaterinburg is celebrated on the third Saturday of August.
